Exploration of Ancient Egyptian Art

Date: June 21 - 25
Grades: 4K - 2nd | Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.   (No class on Tuesday)

Grades: 3rd - 8th | Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Students will learn about, experience and create when, where, how and why the ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphic writing, preserved mummies, created beautiful tombs, and how they built and decorated their palaces and homes. An interesting mix of projects will include:
    - Study and practice writing simple hieroglyphics.
    - Personal cartouche creation.
    - Study of mummy creation and decoration.
    - Creation of either a 2- dimensional painting or 3-dimensional paper mache mummy case     
        using the personal cartouche.

 

Drawing and Painting Animals

Date: June 28 - July 2
Grades: 4K - 2nd | Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.   (No class on Tuesday)

Students will learn to use various tools and techniques used to draw and paint many different animals from prehistoric to the present. Projects will include:
    - Following an introduction to materials and techniques, students will  create at least three   

        finished drawings of their favorite animal(s).
    - Watercolor or acrylic paint may be used to enhance and personalize the students creations.

 

Kite Building

Date: July 19 - 23
Grades: 4K - 2nd | Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.   (No class on Tuesday)

Students will learn how to plan, accurately measure, decorate and construct a working kite design. All kites built will be 'test flown' at the end of the class.

 

Pen & Ink Drawing (Two-week course)

Date: July 26 - 30 and August 2 - 6
Grades: 4K - 2nd | Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.   (No class on Tuesday)

Grades: 3rd - 8th | Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Students will learn various techniques and materials used to create a finished pen and ink drawing. Projects will include:
    - Students will choose their subject matter for their drawings from the drawings of master pen  

       & ink artists (Michelangelo, Durer, Ernst, Picasso . . .)
    - Student will create a working portfolio of drawings using various  pen and ink techniques.

 

Learn to Weave

Date: August 9 - 13
Grades: 4K - 2nd | Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Students will enjoy learning to design and weave various materials into both practical and artistic forms. 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional designs will be explored. Projects will include: Woven mats and woven paper ribbon /yarn bowls.

 

Fun with Macrame

Date: August 9 - 13
Grades: 3rd - 8th | Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Cost: $50
Instructor: Diane Hamil

Students will learn the twists and turns used in the creation of macrame 2-dimensional and 3- dimensional designs. Knots and beads will be used to create: A 2-dimensional simple wall hanging and a 3-dimensional bag or mobile.

 

Making Pop-up Books

Date: August 9 - 13
Grades: 4K - 2nd | Time: 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.   

Cost: $45
Instructor: Jennifer Bengel

Students will explore a variety of hands-on pop-up books about dinosaurs, friendship, animals, and much more. They will also be making their own pop-up books using card stock, construction paper, stickers, and a variety of art supplies.

 

Film Production

Date: July 19 - 23
Grades: 3rd - 8th | Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Calling all future filmmakers, this your opportunity to learn how to make a movie. You will produce a mini-film and see the project through from beginning to end. You will draw a storyboard, create and block your set, shoot and edit your movie for its final premiere.

 

Music Production

Date: August 2 - 6
Grades: 3rd - 8th | Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Cost: $50

In this course, students will randomly choose music from around the world. They will then incorporate indigenous instruments and sounds to compose their own piece. They will produce the music and record it to a CD.

 

Mind Odyssey (3rd - 5th Grades Only)

Date: July 5 - 9
Grades: 3rd - 5th | Time: 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Expand your imagination, exercise your creativity, and build teamwork skills while working to solve crazy challenges. Can you build a car out of milk cartons? Write a story to explain the habitat of the endangered Humdinger? Guide a marble through an obstacle course using egg beaters? Come find out in this fun, anything-goes course. (A great experience for those who love or are curious about Destination Imagination).

 

Chess for Beginners and Intermediates

Two Sessions for each age group: July 19 - 23 and July 26 - 30

July 19-23

Grades: 3rd - 8th | Time: 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Chess is one of the most commonly played games worldwide. It is enjoyed by people of all ages and many tournaments take place annually in this celebrated game. In this course, students will be taught the brief history of chess, the significance and moving abilities of the pieces, and various strategies as they play. They will then be able to challenge other students in the class with the skills they have learned. Come join us this summer as we dive into the wonderful world of chess!

 

Healthy & Creative Cooking

Date: July 19-23
Grades: 4K - 2nd | Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Grades: 3rd - 8th | Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Instructor: Jennifer Bengel

Students will be learning about nutrition and making healthy choices while making delicious snacks they love. They will develop a general background of basic kitchen skills. They will prepare snacks, deserts, and a variety of main dishes.
